Allopurinol is used to reduce uric acid levels in dogs, cats, reptiles, and birds. High uric acid levels can lead to the formation of bladder stones especially in Dalmatians. Uric acid stones can also form in joints can cause gout in birds and reptiles. Generally, allopurinol is best administered 1 hour after meals.
